Academic Biography

I am Dr. Qutsia Tabasum, Assistant Professor in the Department of Forensic Science at the University of Ladakh, Leh Campus. I hold a Master's degree in Forensic Science (2011) and a Ph.D. in Forensic Science (2019) from Panjab University, Chandigarh. My doctoral research focused on the forensic identification of adult human teeth of North Indian populations through comparative odontometric, genetic, and elemental analyses, contributing to the advancement of reliable methods for age and sex estimation in forensic investigations. My academic and research interests lie in forensic anthropology, forensic odontology, human identification, age and sex estimation, medico-legal investigations, and the application of scientific techniques in forensic science. I have been actively engaged in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, mentoring students, and promoting interdisciplinary research that integrates forensic science with public health, anthropology, and social sciences. I strive to provide students with a strong foundation in both theoretical concepts and practical applications, encouraging analytical thinking and evidence-based problem-solving. My research experience includes serving as Co-Principal Investigator in the project titled "A Study of Prevalence, Perception and Consequences of Substance Use Disorder in Leh District (UT Ladakh)," funded by the Department of Social and Tribal Welfare, UT Ladakh. This interdisciplinary project examined substance use patterns and their social and public health implications in the region, reflecting my commitment to applying forensic and scientific expertise to address contemporary societal challenges. I have authored several research papers published in reputed Scopus-indexed and UGC-CARE listed journals, with contributions in forensic odontology, dental indices for sex determination, elemental analysis of teeth, and age estimation using dental evidence. My publications have focused on developing scientifically validated approaches for forensic identification and have contributed to the growing body of knowledge in forensic anthropology and forensic dental sciences. As an academic, I am committed to fostering research collaborations and promoting high-quality scientific inquiry. My work emphasizes the integration of advanced analytical techniques with field-based investigations to generate evidence that is both scientifically rigorous and socially relevant. I actively participate in academic programmes, workshops, and collaborative research initiatives aimed at strengthening forensic science education and research in the Himalayan region. Through my teaching, research, and professional engagements, I seek to contribute to the advancement of forensic science while supporting interdisciplinary approaches that address emerging challenges in criminal investigation, public health, and community well-being.
