Awareness program on “Water Conservation” On 13th November 2024, the University of Ladakh organized an awareness program on "Water Conservation" under the expert guidance of Dr. Jigmet Yangchan, Chief Scientist and Head, MRI & CISIC, University of Ladakh. The program aimed to raise awareness about the critical importance of conserving water in the region, which faces unique challenges related to water resources due to its arid climate and geographical conditions. Through this initiative, Dr. Yangchan and the university aimed to educate the community about sustainable water management practices, the impact of water scarcity, and the role each individual can play in ensuring the efficient use of water. The event was also graced by the Dr. Jigmet Deachen. DSW, Dr. Mohd Hussain, Dean Sciences, Dr. Stanzin Mentok, Dean Commerce and also 48 participants were participated. The event likely included discussions focused on practical steps for conserving water in daily life, as well as exploring innovative technologies and solutions to address water-related issues in the Ladakh region.

First time Ground-Level Survey and Awareness Program on "Water Pollution and Water Conservation Awareness Mountain Research Institute (MRI) of University of Ladakh conducted a ground-level survey and awareness program on "Water pollution and Water Conservation Awareness" today in Taru Village, under the leadership of Dr. Jigmet Yangchan, Chief Scientist and Head of CISIC and MRI University of Ladakh. This event aimed to inform and engage the local farming community on sustainable water management practices essential for the region. Approximately 30 local farmers attended,Dr. Jigmet Yangchan and her team, including Dr. Stanzin Passang, Ms. Tsering Dolma, and Mr. Tariq Ahmed, conducted an interactive session with the farmers to discuss the importance of water conservation in Ladakh. They addressed the challenges of water scarcity in arid regions like Ladakh and shared insights on best practices for sustainable water management tailored to local needs. The team initiated a comprehensive survey to map the water resources of Taru Village. This survey marks the beginning of a detailed assessment aimed at understanding the water sources, consumption patterns, and existing infrastructure. The data gathered will serve as the foundation for future planning and intervention. Dr. Jigmet assured the farmers that after mapping, they would conduct an in-depth water quality analysis using advanced technology available at the University of Ladakh. The university’s CISIC(Centralised interdisciplinary science instrumentation centre) lab, equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, will support this initiative, ensuring scientific accuracy in assessing water and soil quality and availability in Taru Village. The interactive session facilitated open communication between the scientific team and the farmers. Farmers shared their experiences and concerns, while the scientists provided tailored recommendations for water conservation and management. This exchange strengthened the connection between academia and the local community, fostering trust and a shared vision for sustainable water resource conservation.

On November 5th, 2024, the University of Ladakh, in collaboration with IISc Bengaluru, hosted the 6th episode of SAMAVESHA — Uniting Minds and Igniting Innovation, a one-day conference aimed at exploring the initiatives, advancements, and opportunities provided by the I-STEM platform. I-STEM (Indian Science, Technology, and Engineering Facilities Map) is a national digital platform developed by the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, designed to facilitate access to scientific infrastructure and research equipment, fostering collaboration and resource sharing across institutions. The event was held in the Conference Hall of the Leh Campus, University of Ladakh, and took place in two sessions. The inaugural session began at 10:00 AM, with a welcome address by Dr. Mohd. Hussain, Dean of Science at the University of Ladakh. Dr. Hussain warmly welcomed the guests, particularly the I-STEM team, and thanked them for choosing the University of Ladakh as the venue for the first-ever SAMAVESHA episode in North India. He expressed gratitude to Prof. S.K. Mehta, Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, for his consistent support and guidance in organizing such events in the University The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Harilal Bhaskar, National Coordinator and Chief Operating Officer of I-STEM at IISc Bengaluru. Dr. Bhaskar provided insights into the importance of resource sharing within the I-STEM framework. He emphasized that I-STEM helps enhance scientific output by minimizing redundancy in resource investment and optimizing equipment utilization. He introduced the various features available on the platform, including access to free software and the ability to book research equipment across the country. Dr. Bhaskar also highlighted the job opportunities the initiative will create, such as for maintenance engineers and equipment operators, and its potential to support start-ups by providing access to cutting-edge research tools. He also discussed the active role of AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) in supporting I-STEM. Following the keynote, Dr. Subrat Sharma, Dean of Research at the University of Ladakh, shared his thoughts on the I-STEM program and its far-reaching impact, particularly in fields like agriculture and resource management. Dr. Sharma also acknowledged the contributions of the Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. S.K. Mehta for establishing state-of-the-art laboratories on the campus, which have greatly enhanced the university's research and development capabilities. The technical session, which began at 2:00 PM, was led by Mr. Narmdeshwar Pandey, Functional Manager at IISc Bengaluru. Mr. Pandey guided the participants through the I-STEM portal's features, demonstrating how to register, book equipment, and list institutional resources. He explained the processes for updating user profiles, making equipment booking requests, and managing booking schedules. He also addressed common questions related to equipment allocation and payment, providing clear guidelines for ISTEM users, including those from industry, start-ups, and academia. Additionally, Mr. Pandey conducted a live demonstration of how to upload equipment details to the portal and how institutions can register and list their facilities for wider use. The conference culminated in a quiz competition, which involved teams from the Leh Campus, Government Polytechnic College Leh, and the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Leh. The Geology Department from the Leh Campus, University of Ladakh, emerged as the winner of the competition. Following this, prizes and mementos were distributed to the winners. The program was attended by 125 participants, including faculty, scholars, and students from both the Leh and Kargil campuses of the University of Ladakh, as well as from the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Leh, and Government Polytechnic College Leh. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Miss Dolma, Dr. Amjad Hussain, and Dr. Nilza Otzal, who expressed gratitude to the guests, speakers, and participants for their contributions and active engagement.

In a momentous occasion, His Holiness the 12th Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa Rinpoche graced the University of Ladakh's Leh Campus, Taru with his presence on 20th August 2024 at 03:00 PM. The arrival was marked by a vibrant and enthusiastic reception, with students, faculty members, villagers of Taru, and children from the Government Middle School Taru eagerly gathering to honor the esteemed guest. Upon arrival, His Holiness was warmly welcomed by Prof. S.K. Mehta, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, who presented him with traditional khadags—silken scarves that symbolize deep respect and admiration in the Ladakhi cultures. During his visit, His Holiness Tai Situpa Rinpoche delivered a profound lecture on the theme of "Transformation from Knowledge to Wisdom." He elaborated on the developmental stages of human life, from infancy to childhood, and emphasized the critical role of moral education in this transformative process. His teachings resonated deeply with the audience, offering insights into the integration of wisdom and knowledge in the journey of human development. As a token of gratitude and respect, the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Prof. S.K. Mehta, presented a memento to His Holiness Tai Situpa Rinpoche. On May 31st , 2024, the University of Ladakh, in collaboration with Columbia University and the University of Colorado Boulder, hosted a one-day round table discussion on "Sustainability, Tourism & Local Livelihood." The event aimed to bring together academics, policymakers, local stakeholders, and students to explore the interplay between tourism development and sustainable local livelihoods in the Ladakh region. The primary objectives of the discussion were to understand the impact of tourism on the local economy, society and environment and to identify sustainable tourism practices that can be implemented in Himalayan regions. It also aims to explore strategies for enhancing local livelihoods through sustainable tourism. The round table discussion featured a diverse group of participants, including the Faculty and researchers from the University of Ladakh, Columbia University, and the University of Colorado Boulder. Some of the Key Discussions were: The Impact of Tourism on Local Economy and Environment. Tourism has significantly boosted the local economy by creating jobs and increasing income for local businesses. The rapid growth in tourism has led to environmental degradation, including waste management issues, water scarcity, and loss of biodiversity. The connection of climate change and grazing paver and the climate change and coping strategy for it along with the effect of caterpillar fungus based livelihood practices and climate change in Himalayan region. Mr. Chris Jack a USA based rancher expressed his experiences views about sheep herding and challenges he is facing in his farm in USA. He advocated the adoption of rotational use of farm land for grazing to minimize the impacts of cave on ecosystem. The sessions were followed by ques=on answer session including climate change, resolving of tourism impacts, grazing and climate change, livelihood and climate change, sustainable tourism practies in Ladakh, future research domain in Ladakh to develop a sustainable and community centric livelihood practices. The one-day round table discussion on "Sustainability, Tourism & Local Livelihood" was a significant step towards fostering sustainable tourism in the Himalayan Region. The collaboration between the University of Ladakh, Columbia University, and the University of Colorado Boulder highlighted the importance of academic partnerships in addressing global challenges. By implementing the recommendations from this discussion, Ladakh can work towards a more sustainable tourism model that benefits both the environment and the local communities.

This same global program, “Summer Field School on Mountain Ecosystems & Resource Management” (FSc MER 2021), was organized successfully in September 2021 with the partnership and collaboration of 63 universities, institutes, national parks, and organizations from 21 countries. This international training program examines the mountain ecosystems in contexts of human development and natural resources, principles of managing natural resources, and governing the resources for sustainable conservation. Depicting on case studies from a wide range of the current natural resources across the globe, the program considers how different social, political, economic and cultural and gender aspects compete for and sustain the natural resources in mountain ecosystems. The program also examines how environmental activists and their interventions conserved parks, energy, water and land in the face of climate variability based on a gender perspective. The program will consider how the current international and development system elaborates and processes to sustainably manage the available natural resources in mountain landscapes. The program aims at equipping researchers, students, practitioners and young teachers seeking to learn about mountain ecosystems and sustainable development, with practical approaches, knowledge and skills necessary for meeting the challenges of sustainable use of natural resources globally. This international training program is executed in partnership with various academic and practice-oriented organizations. Under the motivation and support of Prof. S. K. Mehta, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Department of Geology, Leh campus Taru Thang is organizing International Earth Science Olympiad – IESO-2023 at Leh Campus of the University at Taruthang. International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) is as one of the major activities of the International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO). It is an annual competition for secondary school students. The main aims of the IESO are to encourage student’s interest and public awareness of Earth Science and to enhance Earth Sciences learning and to enhance Earth Science teaching/learning at school level. The Geological Society of India is the body responsible for selecting the Indian Team for the International Earth Science Olympiad. The IESO is supported by the Ministry of Earth Science (MoES), Government of India as one of its outreach programmes for promotion of Earth Science. In this context all the 196 registered students from various schools of the city are informed that their admit cards has been sent to their respective principles/teachers of the schools and on registered e-mail of the students. The examination would be held on 10th June, 2023 (Saturday) sharply at 10:30AM at University of Ladakh, Leh Campus, Taruthang near Gurudwara Pather Sahib. All the students are advised to reach the examination centre with their admit cards and adhaar cards by 10:00AM. After the examination the students can visit the various labs in the departments of the campus. The Geological Society of India has been organising the national Earth Science Olympiad and the Indian team has been participating the International event from the year 2007. The main purpose of the IESO is to create awareness about the origin of the universe, evolution of the Earth and life and to encourage students and public to take interest in Earth Sciences, and also to promote friendly relations between young students from different countries and international cooperation in the exchange of ideas and materials on Earth Sciences and their teachings.
