The Department of Geology at the Leh Campus of University of Ladakh has started its journey in 2017 with the enrolment of eleven (11) students to PG Course from the session 2017-18. Being located in Ladakh, the department has a bright vision to engage the students in academic and research activities to better understand various aspects of geology of the Himalaya. The department has four permanent faculty members, an expert faulty in the subject of Geology and a specialized Lab assistant to cater the teaching, laboratory and field related studies of the PG students. The Department of Geology has good classroom facilities and laboratories to teach theory and practical course-work of M.Sc students. The department is also focusing on the research and development projects and the faculty members are engaged with one or the other research project. The department is also enrolling PhD students for research and presently three (03) students are pursuing the Ph.D degree. The department has also one female postdoctoral fellow under the DS Kothari fellowship scheme. From academic session 2022 onwards department has introduced Nation education policy (2022) .The courses offered by the Department covers a wide range of Core, Multidisciplinary, Generic Courses and skill based projects in Geology and allied subjects. It provides foundation for the study of fundamental geologic methods and problems, both in the laboratory and in the field. The department also imparts knowledge in the form of Open Elective course to the sister departments of the University.

The Geology Department will develop in each student, critical thinking, enthusiasm, initiative and the necessary skills to become lifelong students of Earth Sciences. To promote basic geological concepts, skills and creativity within a high caliber environment that provides society with knowledge, trained personnel, and competitive masters capable of meeting the educational and development of the world.

The Geology Department seeks to provide the highest levels of education through continuous revision and expansion of our educational, research, and outreach programs in order to produce well-trained, competent, academic and professional geoscientists capable of responding to societal needs.

Highly qualified team of professionals with good academic and research background, Central Heated Class rooms and laboratories, Class rooms with Interactive Smart boards enabled with latest ITC Tools, Well-equipped Laboratories with instruments, samples, and furniture for Mineralogy, Sedimentology, Paleontology and Petrology. Museum having rock and Mineral collections from various parts of country. An Open Air Rock Museum in the premises of the Campus, housing gaint samples of important litho units exclusively from Ladakh Himalayas .
