The Department of Environmental Science was established in 2021 with the inception of University of Ladakh. The Department offers 2 years Master’s Degree Programme. The Department has designed the Environmental Science course as per the current NEP regulations and the students are encouraged to work on multiple minor projects, which enables them to be fit in the field of research, innovation and for the industry also. The Department has state of the art laboratory facility equipped with latest instruments for research based activities, smart classroom, and 24x7 internet connectivity of 100Mbps bandwidth. Environmental Science course at Kargil Campus (University of Ladakh) aims to provide students with the extent of understanding environmental issues. It is done through integrated, problem-oriented study with fieldwork. It is an interdisciplinary compulsory course with an objective to create environmental awareness among students of all disciplines. The faculties have a wide-ranging expertise and background in the subject that teach the course. The Department of Environmental Science develops interests among students in a number of areas, including ecology; energy resources; biodiversity; conservation; pollution; waste management; disaster management; sustainable development; environmental policy and practices; human communities and environment and global climate change. The Department of Environmental Science is also associated with many field experts who have contributed significantly in the field. Students are also offered internship opportunities within the department and the department also promotes field-based research, participation in conferences, workshops and seminars

Mission

The mission of the Department of Environmental Sciences is to contribute quality instruction, education and scientific expertise in the field of sciences, both now and for the future, to meet local as well as global challenges in supplies of natural resources, mitigation of natural hazards, protection of the environment and public awareness. The mission also aims through quality teaching to prepare postgraduate students to dwell into industry and academia for developing sustainable solutions to environmental problems and implementation of environmental policies and diverse learning experiences imparted to postgraduate students. The Department of Environmental Science educates visionary, pragmatic leaders in a collaborative interdisciplinary setting that is founded on academic excellence and the principles of environmental justice and sustainability through:

Creating and effectively disseminating fundamental knowledge about environment, its resources and the processes by which it changes.

To train students and future leaders, and educate the broader public in environmental sciences field.

 To integrate, synthesize, and apply scientific and practical knowledge to societal problems, such as:  

a)     Sustainable use of energy, food and water

b)     Identification and mitigation of risks posed by natural hazards

c)     The consequences of human activities on climate systems and the environment

d)     To understand the issues related to wildlife-conflict and mitigate the problems

                  e)To have a practical knowledge about the conservation of Biodiversity

Best Practices

The Department organizes both curricular and co-curricular activities. The Department regularly organizes seminars, training programs, discussions and technical events for cultivation and fostering of research outlook among the students and faculty members. Field visits to environmentally important areas are conducted on a regular basis as per their syllabus.
