On 12th July, the 3rd day of workshop that has been being organised by Mountain Research Institute University of Ladakh, Taru Campus Leh in collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management South Campus Department of Forest, continued under the proposed topic “Child Centric Disaster Risk Reduction Training of Trainers” from 10th - 14th July, 2023. The session was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. S.K Mehta. The session began by welcoming the special speaker Dr. Dinesh K. Aswal Director Health, Safety and Environment Group, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Mumbai and his team by offering traditional khatags. Our first speaker Sh. Ranjan Kumar delivered a detailed talk on mechanism of NDRF and SDRF and its implementation across the states of India. Second speaker of the day Dr. Dinesh K. Aswal delivered an interesting talk on “Radiation, nuclear energy and environment: All good for human development index of a nation. Dr. Dinesh emphasized on the importance of radiation, nuclear energy, and the environment” . He mentioned that while the Universe contains billions of galaxies and our galaxy has billions of planets, we only have one Earth. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of sustainable development goals. Furthermore, he mentioned that solar energy is the best source of energy. Dr. Dinesh also discussed the biological effects of radiation and mentioned that some radiation is necessary for the growth of cells in living organisms. Moreover, he emphasized that nuclear power is the solution to global energy and environmental challenges. Dr. Dinesh concluded his lecture by exhibiting the positive historical development of nuclear energy that should be implemented in the modern era in a balanced way for a sustainable development. Our speaker for the last session is Dr. Kumar Raka (Senior Programme officer) delivered his lecture on titled “Children’s mental health in disaster and emergencies”, where he highlighted the significance of addressing the child’s mental health in an appropriate and compassionate way. He further discussed the effect on children’s mental wellbeing which is influenced by emotional outburst, behavioural changes and alteration in cognitive functioning. Dr. Raka emphasized on psychological first aid which is a recommendation for children, youth and adult in distress and anxiety. He concluded by addressing the audience on the role of parents and society for the wellbeing of children’s mental health. The ended with a question and answer session followed by tea.
