Press Release Lecture Series 2022-2023 Theme: Monasteries of Ladakh Dated: 12.08.2023 University of Ladakh, Leh Campus today conducted the eighth lecture of the ‘Lecture Series 2022-23’ on the theme of ‘Monasteries of Ladakh’. The guest speaker for the occasion was Venerable Thupstan Paldan, eminent scholar and writer of Ladakh who is an expert in the fields of Bhoti language, Buddhism and history of Ladakh. Honourable Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Prof. S.K.Mehta also graced the occasion with his valuable presence. Faculty and students of different departments were also present in the lecture. The lecture began by welcoming of the guest speaker by Honourable Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Prof. S.K.Mehta and he presented the speaker with khataks and memento. This was followed by a welcome address by Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. S.K.Mehta who welcomed Ven.Thupstan Paldan and highlighted the importance of knowing about the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh i,e. the monasteries and other traditions of Ladakh among the students and faculty. After the welcome address, the guest speaker began his lecture. He talked about Buddhism and how it is similar to science and that Buddhism is meant not only for Buddhists but for people from all sections and regions of Ladakh. He discussed the significance of investigating each and every teaching given by Buddha and to not follow them blindly like customs and traditions. Ven. Thupstan Paldan then went out on to discuss Buddhism in great detail. Afterwards, he talked about the history of Ladakh and the role of kings of Ladakh in spreading Buddhism in Ladakh. He also explained about the different monasteries of Ladakh such as Nyarma Gonpa, Alchi, Sumda and Mangyu Gonpas and how they were built by Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. He concluded by talking about the main principles of Buddhism which include abstention from talking life, taking what is not given, committing sexual misconduct etc. and to incorporate them in one’s daily life. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks presented by co-convenor and host, Dr. Sonam Angmo, Assistant Professor, University of Ladakh.
