The students and faculty members of the Department of Economics, University of Ladakh today participated in an interactive programme in the seminar hall. The resource persons for the occasion were Professor RakeshRaman, Department of Economics, Banaras Hindu University, Professor Mohd Tarique, Department of Economics, Aligarh Muslim University, and Professor Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Department of Economics, University ofLucknow. All the three distinguished resource persons have extensive backgrounds in both teaching and research. The University of Ladakh's Honourable Vice Chancellor, Professor S. K. Mehta, welcomed the eminent professorsand extended his sincere gratitude to each one for taking time out of their busy schedule to participate in thisprogramme of engagement with the students and faculty members. Mr. Ghulam Mustafa, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, briefly introduced the resource persons to the audience before the session began. Following the welcome remarks, Dr. Kailash B. Goswami, Assistant Professor, presented a detailed presentation on the department's goals, achievements, and future plans. The coordinator of the department of economics, Assistant Professor Rigzin Sandup, was also present. Professor Manoj Kumar Agarwal talked about the economic theories that emerged in the 20th century, new advancements in economics methodology, the sustainability of economic growth, various economic systems like capitalism and socialism and how India has advanced with various development plans like Nehru-Mahalanobis model of development after independence. Professor Mohd Tarique discussed the argument that economics is both a science and a social science. He emphasised the value of concepts prior to data analysis and the use of mathematics in economic analysis. Lastly, Professor Rakesh Raman emphasised the role that human capital plays in economic growth and described how several endogenous growth models prioritised human capital. He also discussed the role that different economic sectors play in a nation's ability to prosper economically.
