NSS Press Release The NSS unit, Kargil campus organized a one-day Cleanliness Drive to mark World Ozone Day, with this year's theme focusing on the Montreal Protocol: "Fixing the Ozone Layer and Reducing Climate Change." The cleanliness campaign covered NH-301, encompassing Trespone, Saliskote, and GM Pore (TSG) block. This year's initiative served as a tribute to the Montreal Protocol for successfully phasing out 99% of ozone-depleting substances (ODS), especially since the Scientific Assessment Panel reported that the healing of the ozone layer is on track as of June 2023. Additionally, the Kigali Amendment has aimed to reduce the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), potent greenhouse gases that contribute to climate warming, further mitigating climate change. The NSS unit at Kargil campus collaborated with local bodies, the Rural Development Department (RDD) in Trespone, and the Environmental Science Department at Kargil campus, University of Ladakh to organize this event. Approximately 30 NSS volunteers and faculty members actively participated in the drive. The activities were conducted under the leadership of Coordinator Dr. Mehboob Ali and Co-Coordinator Ms. Sonam Angmo. NSS volunteers efficiently segregated solid waste, separating plastic bottles for recycling and wrappers. The Rural Development Department provided various colored bins for the collection of dry waste and facilitated the transportation of collected waste to the segregation center using their vehicles. Personal protective equipment, such as gloves and masks, were generously provided by Mr. Ismail, Nambarder of Trespone, who played a vital role in ensuring the success of the cleanliness drive. We, the NSS, commend him for his efforts and encourage him to continue maintaining the cleanliness of TSG, both on land and in water bodies. He has committed to conducting quarterly cleanliness drives in the TSG block in the future. Furthermore, the lower division staff of RDD also actively participated in the cleanliness drive in the vicinity of their office surroundings. Simultaneously, an awareness program was conducted, reaching out to shopkeepers, restaurant owners in the TSG block, as well as senior citizens residing there.
