The University of Ladakh, in collaboration with the Ladakh Mountaineering & Adventure Club (LMAC), Leh, commenced a 10-day Rock Climbing Course on October 3, 2024. A total of 17 students from the University of Ladakh, as well as GDC Nubra and GDC Khaltse, are participating in this rigorous training program. The inaugural session began with an introduction to the essential rock climbing equipment by the trainers. Renounced Everester, Shri Sonam Wangyal, shared his invaluable experiences in mountaineering, inspiring the participants with his tales of perseverance and adventure. Reverend S. Gergan, founding member of the LAMC also provided insights into the field of mountaineering, further motivating the attendees. In addition to these esteemed personalities, Shree Urgain Loondup, Secretary, LMAC, Leh, Shri Motup Kalon, LMAC member, Shri Norphel, LMAC member, Mr. Sonam Gytso, Assistant Professor, University of Ladakh, Mr. Lobzang Kunkhyab, PTI, Leh Campus, University of Ladakh, instructors Tsering Angmo Everester & Padma Gyasto Mountain Trainers were also present during the inauguration programme. Dr. Jigmat Dachen, In-Charge Administration and Dean of Students' Welfare at the University of Ladakh, formally welcomed the dignitaries and the students during the inauguration. He extended his best wishes to all participants, encouraging them to make the most of this unique learning opportunity. Shri Urgain Loondup Secretary LAMC introduced the students to LMAC's founding members and emphasized the importance of maintaining physical and mental discipline during the course. Throughout the 10 days, the participants will engage in various activities, including learning essential rope knots, practicing rappelling, jummaring, and other climbing techniques. They will also undergo trekking sessions, enriching their overall adventure experience. This course aims to equip students with practical climbing skills while fostering teamwork, resilience, and a spirit of adventure, in line with the University of Ladakh's commitment to holistic education.
