The University of Ladakh (UoL), in collaboration with the United Service Institution of India (USI), has launched a two-year MA in International Conflict Studies (MAICS) at USI's campus in New Delhi. The program's inauguration took place yesterday, with Maj. Gen. B.K. Sharma, AVSM, SM (Retd.), Director General of USI, and Prof. S.K. Mehta as the chief guests. Other notable attendees included Sqn. Ldr. Rana Chhina, Director of CMHCS at USI, Prof. Deskyong Namgial, Controller of Examinations at UoL, Mr. Nawang Tundup, Registrar and Finance Head at UoL, Dr. Sonam Joldan, Dean of Academic Affairs at UoL, Crd Bhavana, Project Coordinator at USI, and Dr. Archna Tyagi and Dr. Anubhav Roy, both Senior Fellows. In his welcome address, Maj. Gen. B.K. Sharma talks about the importance and need of such a course. Prof. S. K. Mehta, in his address, spoke about many initiatives taken by UoL Ladakh. The other officials who spoke on the occasion were Prof. Deskyong Namgyal and Dr, Sonan Joldan. The MAICS program follows the credit structure of UoL’s MA degrees, comprising 80 credits spread across four semesters of 20 credits each. International Conflict Studies is an interdisciplinary field that delves into the causes, dynamics, and consequences of conflicts between nations and other international entities. It seeks to understand the political, economic, ideological, and cultural factors driving these conflicts, as well as explore ways to manage, resolve, or prevent them. This is a relatively new and emerging course, and only a few institutions in India currently offer courses in this area. The MAICS initiative marks the first joint venture between UoL and USI following the signing of an MoU. The Department of Political Science at UoL is collaborating with subject matter experts and military veterans from USI to ensure the program provides valuable insights for students.
