The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism is established in 2025 and is located on the Kargil campus, University of Ladakh. A new academic unit has been launched in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh. As part of the institution’s strategic expansion, this department is expected to become a milestone in promoting media education in the remote Himalayan region.

Located across the vibrant Kargil and Leh campuses, the department is designed to serve as a center for both theoretical exploration and practical media training. Although the University of Ladakh was established in 2019, this new department aligns with the university’s mission to expand educational opportunities in Ladakh by offering specialized courses in journalism, digital media, mass communication, and related fields.
While detailed information about specific degree programs (such as an M.A.) is still emerging, the department is expected to offer courses that blend traditional journalism with new media skills. This will help students develop a solid foundational understanding along with practical proficiency in content creation, reporting, and media research.
This course is the foundation course for Mass Communication and Journalism. Its primary purposes are to sharpen the news judgment and to improve student’s skills as a reporter, writer and editor. This course would expose the students to the basic concept of communication and understand learn and practice communication skills. The course would also help learn the fundamentals of Journalism and develop journalistic skills involved in news writing and news analysis. Apart from this, the students would be introduced to basic photography skills and parts of camera. In this course students will learn strategies that they will use in deciding what news is, how to prioritize the various elements in a news story and how to communicate that story precisely and correctly. Another aim is to give students considering careers in journalism and media the introductory researching, communicating, writing and editing skills that are a foundation for successful newsgathering and dissemination

Established in 2025 at the Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh, the department trains students in journalism, digital media, and communication. It combines theory and practical skills in reporting, writing, content creation, and photography to prepare students for modern media careers. The department of Mass Communication & Journalism provides state-of-the-art facilities for the students to produce industry grade quality media content. The Department offers two-year (four semester) MA programmes in Mass Communication & Journalism. 
This course introduces students to the basics of communication and journalism, including news writing, reporting, editing, and photography. Students learn to identify news, prioritize information, and communicate stories accurately and effectively.
