Govt. Degree College Kargil (ladakh) is established in 1995 and was inaugurated by Retd. Gen.K.V. Krishna Rao, the then Governor of J & k state and has got affiliated with Kashmir University. Since then it become one of the notable and glorious seat of higher academic learning of kargil, ladakh. It has been catering to the academic aspiration of downtrodden, underprivileged, hilly mountainous and border district of ladakh. It is located at Bagh-e khomenie –the extreme western part of khurbathang plateau, some 500 feet above the kargil town. The location of the college and the surrounding provide the very congenial and tranquil atmosphere for academic pursuit.  Initially the college was run in one room of DIET building with a mere 36 no. of students, and now the enrollment of students crosses 2000. At present the college has beautifully architectural buildings which includes administrative block (consisting Principal chamber, clerical section and staff chamber) Commerce and Geology block, main lecturer block (with a capacity of 100-120 students), science block   (consisting chemistry, Zoology, botany and physics laboratories with a capacity of 35-40 students) and a Canteen. Like an organization, this institute is ever growing and expanding, both in human and structural dimension in order to meet the present and future needs of growing strength of the students.  Recently some other structures like-library block and biochemistry Department were raised.  Two hostels for Girls, each Under PNDP and tribal affairs are under construction and are at the verge of their completion. In the year 2017 higher education department sanctioned funds for the construction of two storied lec urer block and purchase of two Buses. The lecturers block has reached at its lintel level and hope to become functional very soon. The college also purchased two buses in the year 2018. Beside these infrastructures, the whole DIET building has been allotted to college by the state Govt. in 2017 to accommodate the fast growing student’s strength.  The college has four buses facilitate the transportation of students.  The college stands included by UGC under 2(f) and 12(B) on 17th of March 2005 and the college get NAAC assessment accreditation "B".
