Three days “International Conference on Designing a Sustainable Future: Advances and Opportunities in Green Chemistry” took off today on the 3rd July 2023, at the University of Ladakh, Leh Campus. Opening remarks of the session was delivered by Honourable Vice- Chancellor, UoL, Prof. S.K Mehta. He mentioned that the approach behind Green Chemistry is to reduce toxic, lethal chemicals in science, business and arts. Prof. R.K Sharma, Green Chemistry Network Centre (GCNC), Hindu College University of Delhi, briefed about the activities of GCNC and emphasized that Green Chemistry is for human health and the environment. The other dignitaries on the dias were guests of Honor were Dr. O.P. Chaurasia, Director DIHAR and Dr. G. S Kapoor, former Executive Director IOC- R&D and Executive Chairman (ISAS), Delhi Chapter, Honorable Member of Parliament, Shri Jamyang Tsering, . D. Srinivasa Reddy Director CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad and Professor. Avtar S. Matharu Senior Lecturer, Deputy Director of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE) University of York, (UK). Dr. O.P. Chaurasia, Director DIHAR congratulated the University for the Initiative. Dr. G. S Kapoor, former Executive Director IOC- R&D and Executive Chairman (ISAS), Delhi Chapter, stressed that growing energy demands needs alternate thinking on energy use in order to decrease India’s emission rate. The Chief Guest of the session, Honorable Member of Parliament, Shri Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, emphasized that Green Chemistry harnesses human progress and ecological balance. He highlighted the initiatives taken by the government in Ladakh like green electricity through solar power, geothermal projects, green house projects etc. to achieve India’s net zero emission target by 2070.The key note speakers were Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy Director CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad and Professor. Avtar S. Matharu Senior Lecturer, Deputy Director of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE) University of York, (UK). The objectives of the conference were to foster discussion and strengthen connections between experts, researchers to chart out ideas on a sustainable future through Green Chemistry
